First things first
No hot water? Check these three things first
Two minutes of checking can save you a callout. Work through these in order.
Electric unit: check the switchboard. Hot water is usually on its own circuit breaker or a tariff switch. If it's tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call, because the element or thermostat has likely failed.
Gas unit: is the pilot light out (storage) or is there a fault code on the display (continuous flow)? Check the gas bottle isn't empty if you're on LPG. Relight per the instructions on the unit if you're comfortable, otherwise call.
Any unit: is there water pooling at the base or running from the relief valve? A steady drip during heating is normal. A constant stream, or water from the tank itself, means the unit is on the way out.

The compliance plate on the side of the unit shows the manufacture date. Storage tanks on the Coast typically last 8 to 15 years depending on water quality and whether the sacrificial anode was ever replaced (it usually wasn't). If your tank's leaking, it's a replacement. No repair fixes a rusted tank.
Choosing a system
Which hot water system suits a Gold Coast home
Electric storage
The simplest and cheapest to install. A tank heats overnight on an off-peak tariff and stores it. Cheap to buy, most expensive to run, and if a big family drains the tank, you wait for it to reheat. Still the right choice for units, granny flats, rentals and anywhere the budget and access rule everything else out.
Gas storage and continuous flow
Gas storage recovers faster than electric and costs less to run if you're on mains gas. Continuous flow (instantaneous) heats water as it passes through, so you never run out, and it's compact enough to mount on an outside wall. On the Coast, mains gas is available in some estates and not others, so a lot of gas units run on LPG bottles. Both need a licensed gas fitter, which we are. Heat pump
A heat pump pulls warmth from the air and uses it to heat the tank, using around a quarter to a third of the electricity of an electric storage unit. The Gold Coast climate is close to ideal for it, because it's warm most of the year and heat pumps lose efficiency in cold air. Higher purchase price, lowest running cost of the electric options, and often the best fit if you have solar panels. They make some noise, so placement matters.
Solar
Roof collectors heat the water, with an electric or gas booster for cloudy days. On a Gold Coast roof with good north-facing exposure, solar hot water can cover most of your hot water for most of the year. Highest install cost, but the running cost is close to nothing. Roof space, roof strength and shading decide whether it's viable for your house.

A quick way to choose
If you're replacing like for like and the old unit did the job, do that. It's the cheapest, fastest option and the pipework already exists. If you're changing, ask three questions. Do you have solar panels or plan to? Then a heat pump usually wins on running cost. Is mains gas at the boundary, or do you already have LPG bottles for cooking? Then continuous flow gas gives you unlimited hot water in a small footprint. Are you staying in the house ten years or more with a clear north-facing roof? Then solar pays for itself. If the answer to all three is no, a well-sized electric storage unit on off-peak is still a perfectly good choice, especially for a rental or a unit.
One more thing to weigh: where the unit lives. Electric and gas storage tanks need a drained base and a relief line to a safe point. Continuous flow needs an outside wall with clearance to windows and doors. Heat pumps need airflow and somewhere the compressor noise won't bother a bedroom. Solar needs roof access and a roof that can carry the weight. We check all of this at the quote so there are no surprises on the day.

Getting the size right
Sizing: how many litres or what flow rate
Storage systems are sized in litres, roughly 50 litres per person for a household, so a family of four is around a 250 to 315 litre tank. Continuous flow is sized in litres per minute, and a 26 L/min unit runs two showers at once comfortably. Undersizing is the most common mistake we fix. Oversizing an electric storage tank just costs you money keeping water hot you don't use. Tell us how many people, how many bathrooms and whether you've got a bath, and we'll size it properly.

Rebates and paperwork
Rebates and compliance in Queensland
Heat pump and solar hot water installs are usually eligible for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which come off the price at the point of sale. Queensland and federal rebates for efficient hot water change from year to year, so we'll tell you what applies on the day rather than promising a number here. Every install comes with a Form 4 compliance certificate as required in Queensland, tempering valve fitted, and the old unit taken away.

On the day
What happens on install day
- We confirm the unit, location and any changes (moving from electric to gas, or storage to continuous flow, changes the pipework and sometimes the electrical).
- Old unit drained, disconnected and removed.
- New unit set on a compliant base or bracket, connected, tempering valve installed so bathroom water is limited to 50°C.
- Gas connection and pressure test if it's a gas unit; electrical connection by our licensed electrician if the circuit needs changing.
- System filled, tested, set to temperature, and we walk you through it.
- Compliance certificate issued, site tidied, old unit gone.
Most straight swaps are done in two to four hours. A change of system type or location is usually still a single day.

Not everything is a replacement. On units under about ten years old we repair:
- Electric elements and thermostats
- Pressure and temperature relief valves
- Tempering valves that have failed or drifted
- Gas thermocouples, pilot assemblies and ignition modules
- Continuous flow fault codes, flow sensors and ignition faults
- Solar circulation pumps and controllers
- Sacrificial anodes

Five tips to make your hot water last
- Replace the sacrificial anode every five years. It's a cheap rod that corrodes instead of your tank. Almost nobody does it, and it's the single biggest factor in tank life.
- Test the pressure relief valve every six months. Lift the lever for a few seconds until water runs, then release. If it doesn't run or doesn't stop, call us.
- Keep the temperature at 60°C in the tank. Below that you risk legionella, above it you waste energy. Tempering valve handles the bathroom.
- Give the unit space. Heat pumps and gas units need airflow. Don't box them in with a fence or shed.
- Insulate the hot water pipe running from the tank, especially the first metre. It's cheap and stops heat loss.
