Blocked drains
A blocked drain never picks a good time. It's Sunday night, the shower's ankle deep, the toilet gurgles when the washing machine drains, and something out the back smells wrong. This page covers what to do in the next ten minutes, how to work out whether it's one fixture or the whole house, what's actually causing blockages in Gold Coast homes, and how we clear them so they stay clear.
Walter & Co is a licensed, family-run plumber in Helensvale. We run CCTV drain cameras and high-pressure jetters on every van, we answer the phone 24/7, and for blocked drains we aim to be there same day, often within a couple of hours.

Right now
Do this right now if a drain is overflowing
- Stop adding water. No flushing, no showers, turn off the washing machine and dishwasher.
- Check the overflow relief gully. That's the grated drain outside, usually near the laundry or kitchen. If it's overflowing, the main sewer line is blocked and nothing inside will drain until it's cleared. Keep people and pets away from it.
- Don't pour chemical drain cleaner down anything. It rarely clears a real blockage, it damages older pipes, and it's dangerous for whoever has to open the line afterwards.
- Don't put anything down the toilet that isn't paper. Not "flushable" wipes, not the kids' bath toys, nothing.
- Call us. Tell us whether it's one fixture or everything, and whether the gully outside is overflowing. That tells us what to bring.
Gully overflowing out the back?
That is the main line. Phone answered any hour, day or night.
Work it out
How to tell what kind of blockage you've got
| What you're seeing | Likely blockage | Urgency |
|---|---|---|
| One sink or shower slow, everything else fine | Local blockage in that fixture's trap or branch | Book a time |
| Toilet gurgles when shower or washing machine drains | Partial blockage in the main line | Today |
| Toilet won't flush, shower backs up, outside gully overflowing | Main sewer line blocked | Now, 24/7 |
| Water pooling around downpipes or a grated channel in rain | Stormwater blockage | Before next storm |
| Sewage smell but everything drains | Cracked pipe, dry trap or vent issue | This week |
| Blockages that come back every few months | Tree roots or broken pipe | CCTV inspection |

Causes
What blocks drains on the Gold Coast
Tree roots
The number one cause of repeat blockages on the Coast. Roots find the tiniest gap at a pipe joint, follow the moisture and nutrients in, and grow into a mat that catches everything. Established suburbs like Southport, Labrador, Runaway Bay and the older parts of Helensvale have big trees, old pipes and lots of root problems. Jetting clears the roots. Relining or replacing the cracked section is what stops them coming back.
Old earthenware and cracked pipes
Homes built before the late 1980s often still have earthenware (clay) sewer pipes. They crack, the joints separate, ground movement on clay blocks makes it worse, and every crack is an entry point for roots and soil. If the same drain blocks twice in a year, the pipe is the problem, not the blockage.
Fats, wipes and the kitchen sink
Cooking fat goes down hot and sets cold, wipes don't break down no matter what the packet says, and together they build a plug that grows every week. Kitchen and laundry lines get this most. A jetter clears it, and a few habit changes keep it clear.
Stormwater blockages
Leaves, mulch, silt and roots block stormwater lines and pits, and the first you know is water backing up around the house in a storm. If water's pooling around downpipes or a grated channel, it's stormwater, and it pairs with our subsoil drainage work when the block itself is holding water.

Our method
How we clear blocked drains
CCTV drain camera
Before we clear anything serious, we put a camera down the line. It shows us exactly what's causing the blockage, how far in it is, and what condition the pipe is in. You see the footage. That's how we know whether you need a clear, a repair or a reline, and it's why we don't guess.
High-pressure water jetting
The jetter pushes water at high pressure through a nozzle that cuts through roots, fat and debris and flushes the whole line clean back to the pipe wall. It's the difference between poking a hole through a blockage and actually removing it. On a root-blocked line it also scours the roots back to the joint, which buys real time before they regrow.
Electric eel vs jetter
An electric eel (drain snake) spins a cable through the blockage. It's quick for a simple local block and useful in some tight or old pipes, but it punches a hole rather than cleaning the pipe, so blockages return sooner. For main lines, roots and grease, we jet.
Repair, relining and replacement
If the camera finds a crack, collapsed section or a joint the roots are getting through, clearing it is only half the job. Options are: pipe relining, where a resin liner is cured inside the existing pipe with no digging; spot repair, where we dig up and replace just the damaged section; or full replacement for a pipe that's beyond saving. We'll show you the footage and quote each option.

On the screen
What you see on the camera
People are often surprised how much a drain camera shows. The footage is on a screen next to the trench or the gully, and we talk you through it as it goes. Things you'll typically see:
- Root intrusion: fine hair-like roots at a joint, or a full mat across the pipe. Fine roots mean the joint has just opened; a mat means it's been open for years.
- Displaced joints and cracks: a step in the pipe where two sections no longer line up, usually from ground movement on clay.
- Bellies: a low section where water sits permanently, collecting silt and fat. Common on lines that were never laid to a proper fall.
- Grease build-up: a pale coating narrowing the pipe, thickest near the kitchen.
- Foreign objects: toys, wipes, tampons, a toothbrush. Everyone has a story.
- Collapse: the pipe crushed flat. No clearing fixes this, it's a dig or a reline.
We record the footage so you have it for insurance, for a body corporate, or just to compare against the next inspection.

What it costs
Blocked drain cost on the Gold Coast
We quote before we start. What changes the number:
| Factor | Simpler | More involved |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Single fixture, accessible trap | Main sewer line, deep or long run |
| Method | Eel or manual clear | CCTV plus jetting |
| Cause | Wipes, fat, foreign object | Tree roots, collapsed pipe |
| Timing | Business hours | After hours or weekend callout |
| Follow-up | None | Reline or excavation and replacement |
A CCTV inspection with your clear is cheap insurance. It tells you whether you'll be calling again in three months.
Which one is it
Emergency or booked: which is your job?
Call now, any hour: overflow relief gully overflowing, sewage backing up inside, toilet unusable with no second bathroom, water rising around the house in a storm, or a commercial kitchen that can't trade.
Book today or tomorrow: one slow fixture, a gurgle that's started this week, a smell with everything still draining, a stormwater pit you can see is full.
Book before the wet season: repeat blockages you've been living with, a camera inspection on a house you've just bought, and any drain a landscaper or builder has told you "looks a bit off."
After-hours callouts cost more, so if it's a booked-category job, book it. We'll tell you honestly on the phone which one you've got.
Not sure which one you have got?
Tell us what you are seeing on the phone and we will say straight up.
Keep it clear
Five ways to stop it happening again
- Wipes go in the bin. Every one of them, "flushable" or not.
- Wipe pans before washing. Fat in the bin, not the sink. A strainer in the kitchen plughole helps too.
- Get the camera down after any main-line blockage. If there's a crack or roots, fix it while you're already thinking about it.
- Keep the overflow relief gully clear. It should sit lower than any inside fixture and have nothing planted over it. It's the reason a blockage overflows outside instead of in your bathroom.
- Clean stormwater pits and gutters before the wet season. October is the month.
Where we work
Blocked drains across the Gold Coast
We're based at Rosswood Court, Helensvale, and cover the whole Coast from Coomera to Coolangatta. Root-blocked sewers keep us busy in the tree-lined older suburbs of Southport, Labrador and Runaway Bay. Newer estates through Helensvale, Pacific Pines and Upper Coomera tend to have PVC lines and fewer roots, so the blockages there are usually wipes and grease, or stormwater lines silted up on a clay block. Unit blocks and body corporates along Surfers Paradise and Paradise Waters get shared-stack blockages that affect multiple apartments at once, and we handle those as commercial plumbing with a body-corporate report.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Answering your blocked drain questions.
For a main-line blockage or overflowing gully we aim for same day, usually within a couple of hours. We answer 24/7 for emergencies. Single-fixture blockages we book at a time that suits you.
Air is being pushed back through the line because it's partially blocked downstream. It's an early warning of a main-line blockage. Get it cleared before it becomes an overflow.
We'd rather you didn't. It rarely shifts a real blockage, it damages old pipes and seals, and it makes the line dangerous to work on. Hot water and a plunger for a minor sink block is fine.
That's the overflow relief gully. It's designed to overflow outside when the sewer line blocks, so sewage doesn't come up inside. If it's overflowing, the main line is blocked. Keep away from it and call us.
On main-line and repeat blockages, yes, and we recommend it. On a simple sink or basin blockage it's usually not needed.
A resin-soaked liner is inserted into the existing pipe and cured in place, creating a new smooth pipe inside the old one. No digging, no ruined driveway, and roots can't get back in.
Almost always tree roots or a broken pipe. Clearing treats the symptom. A camera inspection finds the cause, and relining or a spot repair fixes it for good.
Yes. We clear and repair stormwater lines and pits, and if the yard itself is holding water we install subsoil drainage to move it on.
